Basically there are 3 types of guinea pig based on
their coat type, smooth, rough and long haired, and then the somewhere
in between types. Within these coat types there are the colours,
of which there are many.
Colours
There are only 3 colours of guinea pig, Black red and white. Then
there are genes that affect these that give a wide variation of
colour, making them lighter or affecting the shade and the eye colour.
Below is a description of the main colours.
White: Can be pink eyed or dark eyed, the dark
eyed guinea pigs sometimes have dark ears, feet and
lips.
Cream: The colour of clotted cream with ruby or black eyes.
Lilac: A medium Dove Grey colour. Eyes are Pink.
Beige: A medium even beige colour. Eyes are Pink. (Sorry
we don't have an original picture)
Buff: A deep rich Buff colour, like the buff envelopes. Eyes
are ruby or black.
Saffron: A medium sand colour with pink eyes. (Sorry we don't
have an original picture)
P.E Golden: A medium Golden colour with Pink eyes.
D E Golden: A medium Golden with ruby or black eyes.
Red: Should be a deep dark red colour with Ruby or black
eyes.
Chocolate: A rich dark chocolate with ruby eyes.
Black: Black and lustrous with black eyes
Within these colours the are also different shades
and variations.
Smooth coated: These have soft glossy coats
where the hairs all grow in the same direction, up and away from
the nostrils and away from the head. This type of coat is very easy
to look after, Groom with a nice soft brush that you can buy in
the pet stores. This will also include the satins and the crested
in this group, but at shows these are classed as coated. There are
many types and colours of guinea pig in this group.
The self's: These are guinea pigs that are all one colour.
They come in black, white, cream, buff, beige, Saffron, golden,
red, lilac and chocolate. The breed self is a term used for smooth
coated self Guinea pigs.
